Conventions of Opening Sequences

The opening sequence of a film not only serves as an introduction to the film but it is also the director's chance to grab the attention of the audience and a time at which viewers can decide how they feel about the movie.

There are key factors that many main stream films focus on:

  • Setting the scene; it is obvious where the plot is taking place, and also very important to include. The location and Mis en scene effects the type of audience you're appealing too and then genre of the film.

  • Introduction of characters, antagonist/protagonist, it is also used so that the audience can gain a sense of the films typical environment.

  • Make the story line obvious and begin to reveal how it will disrupted, this is so that the audience will always be watching and waiting for unexpected parts.

  • Include music which compliments the mood of the film. It can be used to create tension in a drama, or light-hearted feeling in a comedy. In Wolf of Wall Street, the fast pace upbeat music matches the action on screen perfectly to emphasise his story line.
